365:360 - Natalie
At the beginning of this year, I took a picture of our cat Amelie, who was dealing with a chronic health condition. At the end of January, sadly, she had to be put to sleep, which was rough on both Eric and me.
Recently, though, we had begun to discuss the possibility of getting another cat. My sister overheard one of these conversations and, being an expert on cute, furry animals, she took her husband to the pound to help her find one for us. They surprised us with this cute little lady on Christmas.
We named her Natalie. It's nice to have a cat around the house again, especially one that's so cuddly.

Eric and I received the game Settlers of Catan for Christmas, and he was very eager to play it with other members of his family. (The looks on their faces are not looks of sadness or anger, but rather they're looks of concentration.)

Sometimes I see things I'd like to photograph while I'm driving, and often it's very frustrating. This time, though, I was fortunate to be stopped at what I knew to be a very long red light.

We went to Target, thinking we'd run in quickly and buy a gift card as a Christmas gift. What we didn't count on was that the Christmas-themed gift cards would be so difficult to find...and that we'd leave our headlights on, causing the car battery to die. We ended up spending quite a bit of extra time at Pole 14 in the Target parking lot, waiting for someone to give us a jumpstart.
Oh, the holidays.

(Tuesday, December 29, 2009) My new lens (Canon 50mm f/1.8 II EF) arrived today. Tried using it outside, but the windy conditions and bitter temperature sent me back inside. Set up my tripod and opened the aperture all the way (f/22) to try to capture the wind.

(Monday, December 28, 2009) A few years ago I mentioned I thought moose were cool animals. My family took this as meaning I collect moose. I received this moose ornament for Christmas (along with a moose stuffed animal and a moose head magnet.) I love my family.

365:352 - Shed
Believe it or not, this little shed used to be a treehouse. My dad, never doing anything halfway, built this sturdy treehouse for my sister and me when we were in elementary school. It was complete with real windows, doors, and bunkbeds. We spent many summer days playing in the treehouse, and we slept in it with our friends on lots of occasions, as well. I remember jumping from the treehouse porch into giant drifts of snow, and I remember a friend who got nervous about being up so high, so her mom had to rescue her when she was ready to come down.
While Christie and I were in college (I think), one of the four trees that helped to support the treehouse died, meaning that it needed to come down. My clever father engineered the situation so that he could lower the building to the ground without taking it apart. Now in addition to holding a bunch of memories, the little shed holds the lawnmower and other yard tools.

(Friday, 18 December 2009) A few days ago I noticed the Security Mutual building in Downtown Binghamton was decked out in green. Decided today was a good day to get a capture of it. As I was composing this exposure, a guy walking past asked me, “You doing this for your job?” I answered, “No, just for fun.” He replied, “You stand outside in the cold for fun!?!”

(Monday, 14 December 2009) One learns many life skills at camp. A couple years I learned how to knit. I mostly knit potholders. Here’s a pile of said potholders ready to be wrapped for the lunch bunch Christmas party. I used “Eco-cotton” yarn for a few of them (Red Heart uses 75% pre-consumer cotton scraps to make this yarn.)

(Sunday, 13 December 2009) It was a dreary day—rain turned to sleet turned to snow. As I was processing some photos I was inspired by the droplets of precipitation forming on the window. I consider this an ode to Sarah, who loves water droplets.

365:347 - Headlights and Water Drops
On the way home from my sister's house we got stopped on Interstate 81. There was a pretty bad accident involving at least five trailer trucks, so we sat still on the highway for about three hours. We got antsy and impatient and fidgety, but we were very grateful that we were safe.
You know how I love water droplets. I took the opportunity to shoot lots of them (and other things) while we were sitting still.
365:346 - Chesapeake City Bridge
While we were in Baltimore, we traveled to meet Eric's mom and his brother Doug and Doug's fiancee Catherine for dinner and a visit. After dinner, we drove to Chesapeake City, which is this petite, picturesque town with a bunch of quaint little shops. To get to the town, we had to cross over this enormously high bridge, which I enjoyed (although it seemed to make Doug very nervous).
365:345 - Hubcap Christmas Tree
Eric and I went with my parents to visit my sister and her husband in Baltimore for the weekend. On Friday evening, they took us to a certain block on 34th Street that decks itself all out for Christmas. There were a lot of very interesting displays, and this Christmas tree made of hubcaps was one of the coolest.

365:343 - Picasso Detail
We have a small print of a Picasso painting hung on our bedroom wall. I'm not sure of the exact title of the work (I've seen "La Ronde" and "The Dance of Youth"), but it shows red and yellow and white and black people holding hands and dancing in a circle, and in the center of the circle is a dove with an olive branch. I can see the print from where I lie in bed, and when I take the time to notice it, it gives me a sense of hope.
