7//52 & 105.365 (Recycle)

7//52 & 105.365 (Recycle)
(Saturday, February 13, 2010) This is the newest addition to Sky Lake—a recycling shed made out of wood from naturally-felled trees on the property. It was built in memory of one of our long-time supporters, who had a great passion for stewardship of the land and instilled the same in her children and grandchildren.

6//52 (Setting Sun)

(Saturday, February 6, 2010) It was a perfect afternoon to go for a walk across the lake. At least for those that like walking on ice.

088.365 (Founders')

(Wednesday, January 27, 2010) On my way home from the office, decided it was too sunny of an afternoon to let it go to waste. Grabbed my Spectra and headed down toward the lake. Snapped this shot of Founders’ Lodge on my way. I then proceeded to compose a beautiful shot of the sun setting over the lake only to discover that the frame counter on the Spectra was off. By three.

083.365 (One Way)

(Friday, January 21, 2010) I went for a walk after I got out of work today. This is one of the signs along the driveway to Underwood Lodge here at Sky Lake.

068.365 (William Law Road)

(Thursday, January 7, 2010) This is one of my favorite spots on the way into Sky Lake. The sugar maples that line both sides of the road near the West Shore have such character.

050.365

(Sunday, 20 December 2009) Went for a walk down to the lake this afternoon. The wind made it especially cold, but I managed to get in a few good shots. Here’s one of the guard boat on shore for the winter.

Baby Bat

This week was paid summer staff training at Sky Lake. Yesterday, someone spotted this baby bat on the side of the old ice house. We all took a field trip to see it.

Love

Sarah and I were privileged to be asked by Kevin and Stacey to be the photographers for their wedding in November. We thought we’d get some practice in by taking some engagement photos. And by practice I mean well over 1,000 exposures between the two of us! We spent a couple hours this evening photographing the Kevin and Stacey around Sky Lake—the place they met. Above is one of my favorites.

Fawn

Yesterday was North America Nature Photography Day. Unfortunately, the walk through the woods on my list of things to do on my time off yesterday did not happen. To commemorate the special day, I thought I’d share with you this exposure of a fawn that was hanging around the West Shore Field at Sky Lake a couple weeks ago. It allowed me to get within a few feet of it before it ran off.

Mailbox

I took this photo this afternoon for a postcard project I’m working on at work. The joy of digital photography is that one can go from concept to product in no time flat.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the anonymous person who left a carton of eggs in the mailbox sometime on Sunday. It made our morning yesterday!

Mini Waterfall

The runoff from the melting snow and rain a couple weeks ago proved to be the perfect subject for me to experiment with creative exposure.

Rusty Gate

Sky Lake was once the hunting estate of Willis Sharpe Kilmer. Most of the original structures are gone, but the massive stone and iron gates remain. This is part of the gates to the East Shore.

The Old Rugged Cross

I love the rustic feel of the cross at Lakeside Tryst (an outdoor chapel here at Sky Lake) and felt this photo of it deserved its own entry.

A Nature Walk

Okay, so it’s been awhile since I last contributed. Spending more time in the woods taking photos means less time writing about them… Here are a few shots from the walk I took the Sunday before last:

Trees begin to bud much earlier than most expect. This young tree has obviously been budding for quite some time already.

There is a lovely gazebo along the lake path between the two shores here at Sky Lake. I happened to look up and see this wasp nest. I actually used my flash (something which I do not always care to do.) Learning about exposure was very usefully in getting this shot.

One of my favorite spots at Sky Lake is the Lakeside Tryst. I have a lot of great memories of spending time at this location as a camper. Apparently one of our resident Pileated Woodpeckers likes visiting this spot too!
